From Algorithm to Hardware - Faster Image Processing

ABSTRACT :
Although reconfigurable computing has gained in popularity in recent years, in most instances it still requires the manual translation of an algorithm into a circuit that is then implemented using a hardware description language. This process is a significant hindrance to the wider acceptance of this technology by application program developers. This paper reports on the Cameron Project, which has developed a seamless and fully automated translation mechanism from a high-level language to circuits that can be mapped on FPGA-based reconfigurable systems. The applications have focused primarily on image processing and computer vision applications. We report speed-ups on large applications that vary from 50 to 1000 over Pentium-based PCs.
